Richard Enkelis Richard Lewis Enkelis ----- October 3, 1943 - April 4, 2008 Richard Enkelis had many titles – Esquire; General Counsel and Chairman of the Board of the Human Awareness Institute; Cousin Richie; First Honorary Member of the California Association of Judgment Professionals; Sweetie; Secretary of the Remedies Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association; the "fix-it guy" for everything from a computer to a toaster; Mr. Hugs; and lecturer and author for the University of California Continuing Education for the Bar. But the whole of his person was exponentially greater than the sum of all these many talents. Born October 3, 1943 in Portland, Oregon, the only son of Jacob and Jennie (Yudkin) Enkelis, he was immediately adored by a large extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and his older sister, Myra. His paternal grandmother was an identical twin and these sisters’ close-knit family circle gave Richard a nurturing environment that saw him through the death of his father in 1959. Jennie’s family in Connecticut gave him New England strength. Those Yudkin women were made of iron. Richard graduated from the University of Michigan in May 1965, with a B.A. in English Literature and the University of Southern California Law Center in June, 1968 with a Juris Doctorate. Richard was admitted to the California Bar in 1969. He served in the US Army from 1969 - 1971, posted in Anchorage, Alaska. It was while at USC that he and Liane Kruse met at a Hillel event. Richard and Liane were married on September 8, 1968. Sharing his skills and knowledge was at the core of Richard’s nature. He gave lectures and led seminars for numerous diverse groups, from the California Continuing Education of the Bar to the Human Awareness Institute, an international organization devoted to dispelling prejudices and stereotypes. He volunteered his time giving legal advice, counseling, and helping re-hab houses for the needy. He was skilled at fixing all manner of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and computer problems. People were paramount to him. He gave something to almost everyone he crossed paths with – whether it was just a smile or a hug card or hours of time to solve a legal crisis. He enjoyed golf, bridge, science fiction, the camaraderie of his friends and family, and good Scotch whiskey. In addition to his wife, Liane, Richard is survived by his sister, Myra Enkelis; his mother-in-law, Bettijune Kruse; Steven and Penny Kruse (his brother-in-law and sister-in-law ); Kathreen Kruse; (sister-in-law), and numerous cousins. |
